Jamie Veal repeated his opening meeting efforts from one year ago, taking the win in the opening round of the Ultimate Sprintcar Championship NSW last night at Valvoline Raceway.
The race, which doubled up as the annual Brian Healey Cup, was a nail biter as Veal came from behind on the last corner to take the win by 0.06 of a second over James McFadden with Marty Perovich claiming a solid third place.
Veal took the early advantage from his pole position starting spot but McFadden was never too far away and eventually closed the gap and took the lead around mid-race distance. From that point on, it was Veal who played stalker and on the final lap made his move as McFadden got slightly off track.
Jamie Veal now becomes the first driver in fifteen years to win two season opening main events in a row.
Following Marty Perovich in third was Sam Walsh who started last in the field, James Thompson, Danny Reidy, Ian Loudoun, Jeremy Cross, Max Dumesny and Matt Smith rounded out the top ten.
Home in eleventh was Darryl Campbell followed by Robbie Farr who was lucky to finish after spinning into the tyre wall with a lap to go, Jackson Delamont, Toby Bellbowen, Grant Anderson, Alex Orr, Steven Lines, Ben Atkinson, Troy Little, Andrew Wright, Jimmy Matchett, Steve Caunt and Kelly Linigen the last classified finisher. The only non-finisher of the main event was Garry Brazier.
Earlier in the night I was James Thompson who set quick time in time trials group 1 and Veal was quickest in group 2.
Heat race wins went to Andrew Wright, James McFadden, Veal and Matt Smith. Brian Czuczi was victorious in the non-qualifiers.
The Pole Shuffle went to Veal. The C-Main was a win for Jordyn Brazier and Toby Bellbowen took the win in the B-Main.
The next event on the SANSW calendar is round two of the USC NSW at Valvoline Raceway next Saturday night, October 10.
